# Memory: what Aria knows about your project

> Memory holds short notes Aria AI and your coding agents read first: rules, fixes and decisions, a map of your code, and files from your repository.

Memory is what your AI and your agents keep about each project: short notes they read before they work. Aria writes the first notes when your project is set up, and it adds to them as things change. You can read, edit and correct every entry. Memory never holds a secret value.

## Where do I find it?

Open a project and go to **Memory**. **AI & MCP**, then **Memory**, shows every project's entries together. The page has three views: **Board**, which draws the parts of your app and how they connect, **Brain**, a map of the notes, and **List**.

## What is in it?

| Kind | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Overview | What the app is. |
| Runbook | How to run and change it. |
| Rules | How something must be done here, in your words. |
| Fixes | What broke, the fix and how to spot it again. |
| Decisions | What was decided, and why. |
| Learnings | Anything that was not obvious. |
| To do | Work still to do. |
| Changes | Dated notes of what changed, such as an address or a plan. |
| Repo files | Files from your repository, such as `AGENTS.md`. They change when the file does. |
| Notes | Anything else. |

Before anything else, Aria AI reads the index: every entry's title and summary. Then it asks for what it needs, which keeps a long memory cheap to use.

## How does Aria map my code?

After each push, Aria maps your repository: its files, functions and how they connect. The map holds names only, never the contents. **Update now** maps it straight away.

For a folder that is not on GitHub, **Map it on this Mac** does the same from the Mac app. Nothing leaves your Mac until you upload it.

## How do I add or change an entry?

- **New entry** takes a note, or a `.md`, `.txt` or code file up to 200 KB. Aria files it for you, and you tick what to add.
- **Edit** opens the entry. Link other entries with `[[slug]]`.
- **Tell Aria what to change** lets Aria AI write the new version and say why.
- **Update with Aria** checks an entry against the app as it is now, and **Review memory** does the 10 most recently changed entries.

Every change keeps the older version in **History**, and you can restore one. **Export as Obsidian vault** saves your notes as files.

Summaries are up to 140 characters. Use them to say what the entry is for.

## Why was my note refused?

It looked like a secret. Memory keeps notes about where secrets live, never their values, so write that `STRIPE_KEY` is in Environment and leave the value out.

## Can coding agents use memory?

Yes. A key with the `memory.write` capability can note what it learns. See [Connect a coding agent](https://getaria.cloud/docs/agents).
